Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to fit my new bathroom?
The duration of your bathroom installation will depend on the amount of work required. Fitting a downstairs toilet and handwash basin will in theory take a lot less time than installing an entire bathroom suite. The installation time will also depend on other factors such as the amount of preparation work required, and whether or not there are any other dependencies such as plastering and/or electrics. If you are having your bathroom tiled this will also have an impact on the fitting time, and your choice of tiles will also be a factor. We will always try to provide you with an estimated installation time when we provide your quote. Once work has begun we will communicate with you regularly to let you know our progress and when we think the job is likely to be completed.
Can you hide the pipes in the walls?
In most cases it is possible to channel out the walls and sink the pipework in. We will also ‘make good’. If you want to hide the pipes in the wall, please make us aware of this when we come out to survey the job and provide a quote.
Can you fit an electric shower?
Yes, we can fit an electric shower. If you have a particular shower in mind please make us aware of this at the point of quotation.
Will you fit the toilet before or after tiling the floor?
Ideally the toilet will be fitted after the floor has been tiled. This gives a far tidier finish and means the floor will be well sealed. Tiling around the toilet or pedestal means lots of awkward cuts. Tiling first creates a far better-looking finish.
My water pressure appears to be low. What type of shower would you recommend for low water pressure?
If you believe you have low water pressure please let us know. There are a number of potential solutions such as installing a shower pump, an electric shower, or a power shower. It could be something very simple like cleaning or replacing your shower head. We will be happy to help you test your water pressure and assess which shower option is best for you.
Will you need to remove my existing tiles or can you tile over them?
Due to very low background suction the tiling has an extended set time which can impact on the fitting time, so we always strip them off.
How much does it cost to install a new bathroom?
The cost of your bathroom installation will depend on the work required and this will differ for every bathroom project. The cost of the new suite and any materials is one thing to consider along with other additional items and accessories such as tiles, adhesive, grouting, flooring, towel rails, taps, mirrors, and lighting. In terms of labour the cost of fitting your bathroom will depend on how many days it will take, the skills and trades required, and the number of people working on it. We provide free quotations for bathroom installations in Solihull and the surrounding area. Please Contact Us to make an appointment for a bathroom survey and quote.
Can you provide advice on bathroom ventilation?
Bathroom ventilation is very important and there are even some legal requirements to consider. Poor ventilation in a bathroom often means there is condensation which can cause damage and premature wearing to your bathroom suite, fittings, and decor. It can also cause mould and mildew build-up and bad odours up which can all have health implications. If you do not have a window in your bathroom or toilet then you will need to install some kind of ventilation such as an extractor fan. We can advise you on bathroom ventilation options and make sure you are compliant and meeting your legal obligations. There are a number of bathroom extractor fan options including no-noise extractor fans, over-shower extractor fans, extractor fans with built-in lights, and even extractors that have timers or sensors.
Do you carry out building works?
We carry out minor building works associated with your bathroom installation, but not major building works or anything structural or load-bearing. An example of the type of building works we would consider would be erecting or removing a partition wall. Please discuss any building requirements you may have when we come out to discuss the job, even if you intend to get this work completed separately by a builder, because it may have implications or dependencies for your bathroom installation.

Can you install underfloor heating in my bathroom?
Yes, it is possible to install underfloor heating in your bathroom although it is not compatible with certain floors types such as some vinyl floor coverings and some laminates. It’s best to check with both the manufacturer of your floor covering and the installer of the underfloor heating when considering underfloor heating in your bathroom. Generally, underfloor heating is best with floor tiles which are made from slate, stone, terracotta, or ceramic tiles. There are a couple of underfloor heating options, wet systems, and wire systems. We can discuss this with you at the point of survey when we come out to provide a quote.
What is the best type of bathroom floor?
Bathroom flooring is really a matter of personal choice. There are lots of options, porcelain or ceramic tiles, luxury vinyl tiles, stone, engineered wood flooring, rubber bathroom flooring. Laminate flooring can be problematic because if water penetrates any of the joins it can swell and warp. There are however laminates that claim to be 100% waterproof. It’s important to consider who will be using the bathroom, maintenance requirements as well as how it will look.
How long is your work guaranteed for?
All work is guaranteed for 12 months. This is for our workmanship and installation work only, not any defective products.
Will a new bathroom add value to my house?
Yes, if done well a new bathroom is said to add around 4-5% to the value of your house and it will certainly make it more attractive to potential buyers when you come to sell.
Do you tile before or after fitting a bathroom?
This will vary from job to job. In some cases, some of the tiling will be done in advance of fitting the suite and some after. It depends on what’s being fitted, the type of tiles being used, and what will give the most successful finish and look. Elkington Bathroom handles both installation of the suite and also the tiling so we are able to complete tiling whenever required and to achieve the very best results.
